Scripps Co. on Thursday shuttered its Denver paper, the Rocky Mountain News, and on Tuesday The Hearst Corp. said that if it can't gain "a significant reduction in the number of its unionized and nonunion employees" at its San Francisco Chronicle "within weeks" it would "be forced to sell or close the newspaper." The closure of the Rocky had been anticipated for weeks; Scripps had said Dec. 4 that it was putting the 210,281-circulation tabloid daily and its 50-percent interest in the Denver Newspaper Agency up for sale and that if a buyer wasn't found, it would kill the paper, leaving the Colorado city with only the Denver Post, owned by MediaNews Group Inc., Scripps' partner in the newspaper agency.
